Advocacy for Museums

The Association of Science Museum Directors is a proud supporter of national Museums Advocacy Day, spearheaded by the American Alliance of Museums, in Washington D.C.  ASMD is again serving as a co-convener for the 2023 event, which will be held in person on February 27 with congressional meetings on February 28. In 2023, ASMD Executive Director Bonnie Styles will join other association leaders in presenting advocacy tips for museum participants. She will visit the offices of senators and representatives who serve on appropriations committees that fund agencies, including IMLS, NEH, NSF, NASA, and NOAA, that provide crucial support for museums and museum programs. She will advocate for support for all museums (including science museums), and relay the importance of science education, scientific collections, and research to society and the planet. We encourage all museums to regularly advocate for support for their programs and the educational and economic benefits that they provide to their communities and the world.

ASMD Executive Director Bonnie Styles spoke at the Congressional Breakfast in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center at the 2020 Museums Advocacy Day in Washington D.C. She is shown below with ASMD Member Doug Jones, Director of the Florida Museum of Natural History. She is looking forward to advocating in person again in 2023.
