The Association of Science Museum Directors is a proud supporter of national Museums Advocacy Day, spearheaded by the American Alliance of Museums, in Washington D.C. ASMD served as a co-convener for the 2020 event on February 24-25 and is a co-convener for the 2021 virtual event on February 22-23. In 2020, ASMD Executive Director Bonnie Styles joined other association leaders to speak about effective advocacy for museums at the Congressional Breakfast. She visited the offices of senators and representatives who serve on appropriations committees that fund agencies, including IMLS, NEH, NSF, NASA, and NOAA, that provide crucial support for museums and museum programs. She advocated for support for all museums (including science museums), and relayed the importance of science education, scientific collections, and research to society and the planet. In 2020, federal funding for museums continued to be a major issue and museums were also significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, tax reform, education policy, infrastructure legislation, and more. In 2021, museums continue to face the impacts of the pandemic and all the issues confronted in 2020. The stakes have never been higher. Please join us to advocate for museums.
