Our 2018 ASMD Directors Forum convened in Houston, Texas on January 29-31. We were hosted by Space Center Houston and the NASA Johnson Space Center. We also explored other Houston museums with their leadership teams. Tom Kartrude, Executive Director of the Armand Bayou Nature Center, introduced us to the beauty and ecological importance of bayous. We toured the Houston Museum of Natural Science with Lisa Rebori, Vice President of Collections and Exhibitions, including a look at their new Wiess Energy Hall with developer Paul Bernhard. Lunch and a panel discussion with their whole leadership team including Director Joel Bartsch introduced us to the renovations they made over the past several years to expand exhibition and educational programming spaces. We also explored Texas cuisine and had time for informal conversations with colleagues. The full program is available in the Updates for Members section of this website. We wish you could have joined us. … More Houston was invigorating!
William Harris hosted the 2018 Directors Forum at Space Center Houston and NASA Johnson Space Center from January 29-31. We had an invigorating meeting with the Directors’ Round Table, frank dialog on “Hot Topics” with Laura Lott , AAM President, and Cristin Dorgelo, ASTC President (flanking William Harris above), a preview of the new Space Center Houston master plan by William Harris, followed by exploration of Space Center Houston and Johnson Space Center including the astronaut training center and past and current mission operations control rooms.
Participation in a charrette on Space Center Houston possibilities facilitated by Jim Oswald (Gensler) helped us re-imagine the science museum of the future. Jim Oswald also worked with us to refine and strengthen the purpose of ASMD. Stephen Klineberg’s (Founder of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research) thought-provoking presentation on his long-term study of the dramatic changes in demography, economic outlooks, experiences, and beliefs in the Houston area highlighted changes occurring across the country that are critical to consider in museum planning for the future. A surprise presentation by astronaut and Director of the NASA Johnson Space Center Dr. Ellen Ochoa in the Star Ship Gallery, in full view of the Apollo 17 Command Module, highlighted an already incredible experience.
