We convened in Seattle for the 2022 ASMD Directors Forum (February 1-4, 2022). The Program Committee chaired by Vice Presidents William Harris (Space Center Houston) and Tracy Calogheros (The Exploration Place + Science Centre), and including other ASMD Board members (President Joe Keiper, Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Pierce, and Immediate Past President Todd Boyette), and Host Committee members Julie Stein (Burke Museum), Will Daugherty (Pacific Science Center), and Matt Hayes (Museum of Flight), and ASMD Executive Director Bonnie Styles planed an excellent final program that is accessible by clicking on the link. We were excited to return to our traditional in-person format after meeting virtually in 2021.
The program included sessions on decolonization of museums, strategies to make hiring and executive leadership searches more equitable, updates on DEAI initiatives, planning for institutional renewal, and pandemic survival stories and reflections. Sessions and highlight tours with the directors occurred in all three of the host museums, including the Burke Museum, Museum of Flight, and Pacific Science Center. The meeting also included special visits to the Amazon Spheres, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and Climate Pledge Arena, and optional free visits to the Space Needle and the Museum of Pop Culture. Our meeting featured our traditional retreat-like atmosphere and provided great opportunities for sharing strategies to improve our institutions.
The conference hotel, the new LEED Gold Hyatt Regency Seattle in the heart of downtown, provided a great gathering place for continuing our discussions into the evening hours. The conference rate was available for three days prior and three days after our meeting, and many took advantage to see more of the Seattle area. Please remember that our Directors Forum only open to ASMD members in good standing, Associate Directors invited by ASMD members, and directors/CEOS invited by the ASMD president. ASMD members may choose to bring their significant others, and they participate in social and field trip functions. The Registration Form is available here and in the Updates for Members Section of this website.
